Dear President-elect Joe Biden,

We call on you to put a moratorium on new fossil fuel extraction on public lands. Climate change is the number one issue facing humanity, and we must do everything we can to stop it. Twenty percent of our country’s emissions come from fossil fuels extracted from public lands and waters — we can’t afford to let the oil industry drill even more.

We also ask that during the moratorium, the federal government conduct a comprehensive analysis of the impact of oil and gas production on federal lands and come up with strengthened and restored regulations that prevent continued harm to nearby communities, which are predominately communities of color. Specifically, Indigenous and frontline communities often bear the worst impacts of fossil fuel extraction on public lands, and we must stop this injustice.

There’s no one policy that will stop climate change, but this moratorium is a critical part of the ultimate solution. Please act now.
