HOLD THE SENATE

We’ve talked about how we can win the Presidency in swing states, and we know we’ll need to focus on key congressional districts if we want to flip the house. That brings us to the third, most-critical piece of the puzzle: holding the Senate.

If Kamala Harris wins the Presidency and Democrats flip the House and hold the Senate, more climate action at the federal level becomes a very real possibility. Tim Walz would also gain the tie-breaking vote in a 50-50 split—a vote that Harris leveraged to pass the most sweeping and impactful climate legislation we’ve seen in decades. We’re still seeing the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act play out in real time, pushing us closer and closer to our climate goals and the realization of a clean energy future.

But it’s looking like winning won’t be that easy.

Here’s the situation: Even though the current Senate balance is 51-49 in Democrats’ favor, the 34 seats up for election this November present a challenging mix of seats to defend. Democrats and the Independents they caucus with currently hold 23 of the open seats, while Republicans hold the other 11.

With Joe Manchin’s retirement, Democrats are expected to lose their seat in West Virginia. So even if they can secure the presidency and Tim Walz’s tie-breaking vote, Democrats will still have to defend the other 22 seats to maintain control.

That’s where things start to get tricky.

Close races are expected in nearly every battleground state, but the two biggest toss-ups are in Ohio and Montana. Given that Senate election results often mirror presidential election results for each state, many polls are projecting that these are the Democrats’ seats to lose.

But there are still 5 weeks until Election Day, and you know what that means? There’s still something we can do.

Start local and scale up: Tell your friends, family, and community that supporting a progressive Senate majority is the best way to protect our climate and future. Use the GiveGreen platform to donate to candidates in competitive races. And join postcarding efforts to mobilize swing state voters and let them know what’s at stake!

We have a Senate to hold, a House to flip, and a Presidency to win, so let’s get busy!
