2024 IN REVIEW

You might be tempted to write 2024 off as a bad year for climate. Between the election results, updated warming projections, and natural disasters at home and abroad, it’s clear that addressing the climate crisis is urgent—and it won’t be easy in the years to come.

But we achieved a lot for the climate in 2024—and we have YOU to thank! CANdoers:

  • Sent over 815,000 messages this year
  • Planted more than 100,000 trees
  • Helped countless pieces of important legislation over the finish line.

Here are just a few of the victories CANdoers helped bring about:

  • VICTORY! Governor Hochul recently gave New Yorkers the best holiday gift of all: her signature on the Climate Change Superfund Act. This revolutionary bill will hold polluters accountable for their contributions to the climate crisis, generating $75 billion for mitigation and adaptation efforts in New York State over the next 25 years. And if this wasn’t monumental enough already, Hochul also opted to revive congestion pricing in New York City at a $9 rate, which was given the all clear by the Federal Highway Administration and is expected to result in fewer cars on the road, reduced air pollution, and funding for public transit!
  • VICTORY! Early this year, President Biden announced a pause on the buildout of liquefied natural gas export terminals in the United States. Not only is LNG worse for the climate than coal, but the terminals have proven to be incredibly harmful to local communities and continued exports threaten to increase domestic gas prices. Even with the Department of Energy’s recent report on the dangers presented by LNG, Trump is sure to reverse this pause—but opposition will continue at state and local levels!
  • VICTORY! This September, Governor Newsom signed the country’s first food labeling reform bill into law, making California the first state to ban “Sell By” dates on food packaging. The bill also standardized food labeling, bringing the more than 50 phrases previously used down to just 2. These important improvements will play a critical role in the fight against food waste by dissuading consumers from throwing away perfectly good food!

But these aren’t the only things we’re celebrating from the past year—2024 was also a major year of growth here at Climate Action Now. We also:

The wins you helped achieve this year are proof that we can advance climate action at the state and local levels. So, let’s wear our victories with pride, hold onto our optimism, and keep doing what we can for the climate as we step into the new year!

Lastly, some special words of thanks from Climate Action Now President Tim Guinee:
