DEFEND THE IRA

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. And no, it’s not beautiful, not by a mile.

From a climate perspective, it would more aptly be called the One Big Beautiful Gift to the Fossil Fuel Industry Bill, because they are the only constituency that wins with the rollback of the IRA’s climate provisions.

The controversial budget bill passed in a 215-214 vote along party lines, with all Democratic House members voting against it. The final version includes over $600 billion in Medicaid cuts, a quicker phaseout of clean energy production and investment tax credits, and pay-to-pollute privileges for fossil fuel companies.

This bill will support the ultra-wealthy at the expense of the American people. But even without getting into its cruelest provisions, one thing is clear: this bill, if passed, will be a huge win for China and a tragedy for the American people.

Here are just a few examples of what the proposed cuts would do:

  • Increase energy costs for the average American household by as much as $160 per year in 2030 and monthly electricity bills by 9%;
  • Effectively kill the domestic battery manufacturing industry, with production expected to fall by 75% and EV sales expected to drop by 40%; and
  • Jeopardize hundreds of thousands of jobs and more than $400 billion in clean energy investments in communities across the country.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

These cuts would gut the very industries that can deploy new energy at the speed and scale needed to meet rising demand. They would be more punitive to Republican-led districts than anyone else. And they all but guarantee that America will be left behind and rendered increasingly irrelevant in the rapidly growing global clean energy market.

It’s so stupid it beggars belief. And who benefits? Fossil fuel industry billionaires. Stupid.

And talk about Profiles in Cowardice. Every Republican who signed letters urging preservation of provisions that benefited their districts voted to end them. Ultimately, fealty to Donald Trump was more important than their oath of office and the welfare of their constituents.

Yet, hope remains.

Republican senators who support preserving parts of the IRA have already pushed back on the rapid phaseout of clean energy investment and production tax credits. They recognize just how bad the new timeline and other cuts would be for businesses that have already invested heavily in these sectors, not to mention future energy security, innovation, and national competitiveness. Other senators have also spoken to make changes to support emerging technologies, like geothermal energy.

And who knows? They may cravenly cave like their counterparts in the House, but political calculations are different for Senators than for Representatives because many Senators will outlast the Trump presidency. And it will only take four Republican defections to change the overall outcome. That’s an opportunity we have to seize.

Let’s remind our senators just how much is riding on their actions and votes—and just how much the Inflation Reduction Act has done for the United States!
