DEFENDING OUR DEMOCRACY
- February 17, 2026
The Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to repeal the endangerment finding is devastating.
The finding has been the linchpin of U.S. climate regulations since 2009, drawing a clear link between climate change and public health impacts. It is the sole reason the EPA has authority to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, and it has been used to justify almost every major piece of climate legislation in the last decade and a half.
If the repeal and associated rollbacks survive the legal challenges ahead, it would be a seismic shift—one that would result in more air pollution, premature deaths, planet-warming emissions, and extreme weather. And unfortunately, it’s a change that future administrations will have a hard time reversing.
It’s a frustrating, terrifying, infuriating decision that so clearly epitomizes the EPA’s new direction—how intent they are to endanger the American people, the climate, and our environment if it means making the rich a little richer.
But we have to remember that the fight is far from over.
While there have been several attempts to revoke the finding since its establishment, the courts have consistently upheld it. Additionally, last year, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reassessed the science behind the endangerment finding and concluded that it’s the strongest it has ever been. So when environmental organizations inevitably take the Trump administration to court, they won’t just have legal precedent backing them up—they’ll have the best evidence possible.
Which begs the question—if the law, science, and momentum are on our side, how did we get here?
It happened because of the outsized influence of industry, especially the fossil fuel industry, on our political system—because the people running the show seem to care only about lining their donors’ pockets and holding on to power. They’re more than willing to trample our rights, endanger our health and safety, spread misinformation, and violate the Constitution if that’s what’s necessary to keep their power and profits.
This is our current reality. And it makes one thing crystal clear: there’s no saving our climate without saving our democracy.
That’s why we’re excited to bring you something new.

Cmate Action Now’s new Dashboard for Democracy is a one-stop shop for democracy-focused actions. We’ve compiled advocacy opportunities from Jessica Craven’s Chop Wood, Carry Water, Indivisible, No Kings, Robert Hubbell, and more in one place—and while we’re just getting started, we’re adding new opportunities for action each week. Let us know if you’d like to help!
We know what some of you are probably thinking—that this feels like a departure from the most pressing issue facing humanity. We’re just as dedicated to fighting climate change as we’ve ever been, but if we don’t defend our democracy, we’ll never restore the climate progress we’ve lost. We’re launching this tool to empower those of you who have been looking for ways to defend our climate and our democracy.
At the same time, using the Dashboard may not be your cup of tea. We understand how many of you are all-in on climate, and the critical work you’re doing there is as important as ever. We’re all in this fight together—and it’s going to take each and every one of us to get this harmful regime out of power, elect people who stand firmly on the side of progress, and carve a path to a better future.
We’re excited about this. We hope you are too!
