HAPPY BIRTHDAY IRA!

Two years ago, years of hard campaigning by climate activists — including over 230,000 messages sent by CANdoers — paid off with the most groundbreaking climate legislation in world history — the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — with Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote.

As we blow out the candles on this milestone, it’s time to celebrate the game-changing impact the IRA has had on our environment, economy, and communities. You’ll find a complete rundown here, but we’ll give you the highlights:

  • $900 billion–that’s the staggering amount of clean energy and manufacturing investments since the Biden-Harris administration took office.
  • Over 99% of high-poverty counties are now benefiting from investment projects funded by the IRA and other new laws under the Biden-Harris administration.

WOW! The IRA is more than a climate win—it’s a win for America.

But here’s the catch: too many voters are still in the dark.Yale and George Mason University poll from this spring revealed that around 40% of registered voters have heard “nothing at all” about the IRA. Even among liberal Democrats, more than half admit they haven’t heard much about it.

The good news? Once people learn about the IRA, THEY LOVE IT! Among those who consider climate change a top voting priority, a whopping 97% supported the law after reading a short description.

And here’s where things get interesting: the IRA, once a partisan flashpoint, is now winning over Republicans. Two years ago, not a single Republican in Congress voted for it. But as the lion’s share of the IRA’s economic benefits have landed in red and swing states–particularly in the South and Midwest–some GOP members are singing a different tune.

Despite Trump’s threat to dismantle Biden’s climate policies if re-elected, 18 House Republicans recently urged Speaker Mike Johnson to protect the IRA’s energy tax credits from repeal efforts. Even Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who’s backed Trump, vowed to support the companies bringing jobs to his state, no matter who sits in the White House next year.

This growing bipartisan recognition of the IRA’s benefits is an opportunity we can’t afford to miss. If we passionately express support for the IRA to our federal legislators and fellow voters, we could solidify an emerging pro-IRA consensus—making this law untouchable, even under a worst-case scenario Trump trifecta.

So, let’s spread the word: the IRA is not just a climate law–it’s a jobs engine, a community builder, and an economic powerhouse. Together, we can ensure its continued success by rallying support from every corner of the country, no matter the political affiliation.
