How We Win
- August 5, 2024
We’ve said it before: the climate movement’s top priority is to elect a climate champion to the Oval Office. Nothing else comes close.
The stakes could not be greater. On Day 1, a President Trump would likely once again withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and then, as he has promised, “Drill, baby drill!”
If we are to preserve a livable planet, Kamala Harris must be the next President of the United States. But notwithstanding the huge burst of support for Kamala in the last few weeks, Donald Trump is still favored to win. We cannot allow that to happen.
But what to do?
The hard math of the Electoral College makes it very clear: the 2024 election will be decided by a few tens of thousands of voters in a handful of swing states. In the 2020 election, just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin separated Biden and Trump from an Electoral College tie. The key to winning is to get out the vote of climate-aware citizens in those states.
If you live in one of the swing states, you must vote, and you must drag every like-minded citizen with you to the polls.
But what about the rest of us? What can we best do to help get Kamala elected?
To help us answer this question, Climate Action Now has organized three events in the next 6 weeks. We will take you on a deep dive into the electoral process and learn from experts how best to use our time and money to affect the election.
Please read each of the event descriptions below, then register, and tell everyone you know about them.
While you are at it, check out the recording of our Get Out The Vote with the Environmental Voter Project Action Party in January. For our money, the EVP has one of the best ground games for getting out the environmental vote.
There have been many times in our nation’s history when ordinary citizens were called upon to act. This is our time. We are all in this together. If each of us does our part, we can win this. Let’s get to work!

You have been bombarded with political donation appeals. But you’ve probably asked yourself, “Do my political donations really matter?” “Will they be well spent?” “What organizations will make the best use of them?”
Climate Action Now asked David Callahan of Blue Tent to answer these and other questions you may have. (Click here to submit your questions in advance.)
Dave has over 30 years of experience in progressive organizations and media. He is editor of Inside Philanthropy, which covers the world of philanthropic giving. He is also the author of “The Givers: Wealth, Power and Philanthropy in a new Gilded Age” and as well as seven other books. He holds a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University.

What’s the deal with swing states? What is the key to swinging them one way or another? Can people outside those states influence voters in those states?
Climate Action Now tapped Lewis Friedland, Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin — one of the three must-win swing states for Kamala — to unpack those questions and guide us towards effective action in those critical states. As in 2020, communities of color may once again hold the key to electing Kamala and other climate champions.
We asked Andrea Miller of the Center for Common Ground to help us understand what communities of color need to once again play a critical part in the election. Andrea is the Founding Board Member of the Center, Executive Director of People Demanding Action, and Founding President of the National Women’s Political Caucus of Virginia.
