OUR POWER, OUR PLANET

Wednesday marks the 56th annual Earth Day, and this year’s theme is one of the most poignant to date:

“Our Power, Our Planet.”

It’s a reminder of what has become all too easy to forget—that dedicated advocates, workers, communities, and visionaries are driving progress day in and day out, and the momentum they have built over the years cannot be stopped by a single administration or leader.

Just consider some of the hopeful developments we’ve seen in the U.S. this year, despite federal and executive hostility to clean energy. The Energy Information Administration projects that solar, wind, and battery storage will make up 93% of the 86 gigawatts coming online this year. All five of the offshore wind developers who sued the Trump administration over stop-work orders won their court cases. And while we would never call the war on Iran a win, it’s undeniable that it has bolstered support for clean energy and electric vehicles worldwide.  Way to go, President Trump, our accidental clean energy president!

Even at the state and local levels, we’ve seen wins aplenty. Clean energy advocates recently won an 8-6 majority on the board of Arizona’s biggest public utility. This is a HUGE win!  Ann Arbor, Michigan, just launched its own clean energy utility. And plug-in solar bills seem to be sailing through state legislatures with strong bipartisan support.

But the most hopeful development of all? The winds of change are blowing politically, too.

No Kings 3 made history as the largest single-day protest in American history, with nearly 10 million Americans taking to the streets to protest Trump’s assault on our democracy. Be sure to check out our Dashboard for Democracy!

Between the ongoing, unjustified war in Iran and his conflict with the Pope, Trump’s approval rating is declining even amongst his own followers. Best of all, we’re seeing frustration with the affordability crisis reflected in special election results, with Democrats flipping more than two dozen seats in special and state legislative elections since the start of Trump’s second term.

But that’s not all.

The respected Cook Political Report, whose predictions have long held that Democrats have no chance of flipping the Senate, has noted the shift. Several races previously considered guaranteed victories for Republicans have turned into toss-ups—and what appeared to be an impossible victory for Democrats a few months ago has become an actual possibility.

The momentum is clearly on our side. And if we’ve learned one thing from U.S. special elections —not to mention the recent election results in Hungary—it’s that we can elect climate champions, reclaim our democracy, and restore our hope for a better future.

The official Earth Day organizers said it best: “[Progress] is sustained by daily actions of communities, educators, workers, and families protecting where they live and work.”

Volunteering in your community, advocating for policy change through the CAN app and carousel, and even knowing when to step back and take a breather—all of it plays an essential role in the broader push for change. And so long as we don’t give up, there isn’t a single leader or administration that can stop us from winning.

Join us as we keep up the fight!
