THIS IS NOT WHO WE ARE
- March 10, 2025
We do not stand with dictators who rain missiles on innocent civilians for the sake of territory and power.
We do not stand with corporations that foul our air, water, and food for the sake of profits.
We do not stand with the billionaire bros who gleefully take medicine and food from the mouths of the poorest of the poor.
This is not who we are.
We do not use our privilege and power to bully our friends and neighbors, seeking advantage at any cost so that others will think we are strong.
We do not engage in random acts of cruelty because we think it makes us look cool.
We do not ignore science because it is inconvenient. We do not gut the institutions that keep us safe and secure because they sometimes make mistakes.
This is not who we are.
We do not do these things because we know they are wrong and reckless, and the price we pay will be terrible.
If we bully our friends when we are strong, they will not be there for us when we are weak.
If we deny the reality of climate change, we will impede progress now and imperil the lives of billions later.
If we seek maximum gain at the expense of others, then we show we are not of the people who made America great.
The vast majority of Americans are decent, warm-hearted people who want the right thing for their families, communities, and country. Sadly, a plurality of them believed President Trump’s lies, thrilled to the grievances he evoked, and gifted him with immense power. Many of them, and no doubt Mr. Trump himself, think he is doing the right thing.
We cannot stop much of the harm Mr. Trump will do in the days, weeks, and years ahead. But actions have consequences. Over time, the tragic consequences of Mr. Trump’s actions will become manifest, and we will reap the whirlwind. Eventually, a majority will repudiate them and put us back on a path from rupture to repair.
In the meantime, beginning now, in the quiet of our own minds, we affirm that this is not who we are. We will do what we can now, with our words, our dollars, our voices, and our votes, to mitigate and repair the damage that we must now endure but will never ever accept.
