COST OF IGNORANCE, PART 4

Between their deceptive report on climate, plans to revitalize the U.S. coal industry, and efforts to blame rising electricity rates on renewables, Trump’s Department of Energy has been doing everything they can to derail climate progress and downplay the severity of the crisis.

And on the first day of the government shutdown, they announced their biggest attack on clean energy yet—the cancellation of $7.6 billion in funding, impacting more than 200 projects in 16 states.

The grants on the chopping block were awarded to projects spanning a wide range of topic areas, including energy efficiency, clean energy technologies, domestic manufacturing, and grid upgrades. These projects have the power to lower energy costs, achieve much-needed infrastructure improvements, and help us progress toward a clean energy future.

But here’s the kicker: each and every impacted project is in states that voted for Kamala Harris.

Of course, according to Energy Secretary Wright, these politically-motivated cancellations are a gift—a necessary, viable measure to protect taxpayer money, reclaim funds that were thoughtlessly spent by the previous administration, and ensure our resources are being used to meet America’s energy needs.

But the facts tell a different story.

  • These cancellations are illegal. When these grants were approved during the Biden Administration, the U.S. government entered into legally binding contracts with the funding recipients. Canceling them is not only out of step with legal precedent but in violation of the Impoundment Control Act.
  • These cuts will drive electricity prices up. Terminating grants for energy efficiency, clean energy, and grid upgrades means gutting our best options for quickly and affordably meeting rising energy demand—and that means higher electricity bills for everyone. A prime example is the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships funding, which would have supported the build-out of five high-voltage transmission lines across Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
  • The terminated grants impact more than just blue states. Some of the projects losing funding span districts, starting in a Democrat-led district and ending in a GOP-led one. Others are associated with blue states on paper but actually located in red districts or states. As a result, at least 28 GOP districts are expected to lose out on thousands of jobs and anywhere from tens to hundreds of millions of dollars.

This misguided act of political retribution will hurt everyone—and it’s only the tip of the iceberg. According to several sources, the DOE is already considering additional grant terminations that would impact Republican- and Democrat-led states alike.

It’s a bleak situation. But all we can do is keep raising our voices for a better future—and remember that we’re not the only ones fighting.

Join us as we advocate for the restoration of these grants and let the DOE and our elected officials know that we won’t stand for this!
