THEY’RE STILL LOSING!

According to multiple major news organizations, e.g., the Washington Post, President Trump famously asked the fossil fuel industry to raise $1 billion to support his 2024 presidential campaign.

It appears that Mr. Trump didn’t get anywhere near that amount of money — so much for being a great deal maker! — but no matter. The Trump Administration has delivered.

It has defunded previously approved clean energy projectsgutted incentives, and sold our public lands to the highest bidder. It has paid companies to kill offshore wind projects using a taxpayer-supported fund. And it has rescinded countless environmental rules, paving the way for companies to freely pollute and increase their profit margins at the public’s expense.

The industry’s fingerprints are all over these disastrous policy decisions. And between receiving tens of billions in subsidies and earning $30 million in windfall profits per hour during the first month of the Iran War, they’re already reaping the benefits.

Talk about an ROI!

But even with these wins—even with the Trump administration using every ounce of power at their disposal to kill clean energy progress—they’re still losing.

Consider the following:

  • EVs just had their best sales month since the federal tax credits expired. The war on Iran—now tentatively over—has caused a 50% increase in gas prices since March. This has put significant strain on working family wallets, but it’s also caused consumer interest in EVs to skyrocket. So long as gas prices stay high, adoption will accelerate—and according to the most recent projections, it will be a long time before prices come back down.
  • Solar just outpaced coal for the first time in U.S. history. In May, solar power accounted for 12.8% of the U.S. electricity mix, overtaking coal by 0.6% of the U.S. electricity mix, overtaking coal by 0.6 percentage points. The difference may be small, but it was only five years ago that the numbers were 5.4% and 19.7%, respectively. It’s clear that solar’s growth isn’t stopping anytime soon!
  • The Trump administration keeps losing in court. In just the last few weeks, federal judges have blocked the dismantling of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, thrown out the IRS notice that placed punitive restrictions on wind and solar tax credits, and ordered the Department of Energy to reinstate some of the grants canceled in their attack on blue states. The administration’s ban on wind permitting has also been overturned. Even if these victories take time, they’re happening—and they’re really starting to add up.

We’re not trying to make light of the immense damage the Trump administration has done. But these facts matter. They remind us that the transition has real momentum, even after countless setbacks—and that even with the Denier-in-Chief running the show, we can still win.

And let’s not forget—in less than five months, we have a real opportunity to flip the script.

The midterms are our opportunity to elect a Congress that will stand against their regressive agenda, enact policies that actually help the American people, and undo some of the damage that’s been done.

It’s our chance to say, loud and clear, that we won’t let the fossil fuel industry and its climate deniers win—and we won’t let our democracy crumble.

Until then, we’re going to keep making our voices heard. Join us!
